Nosy Rosie

Title: Nosy Rosie
Author/Illustrator: Holly Keller
Publisher and date of publication: Greenwillow Books 2006
Genre: Fiction
Age: K-2

Nosy Rosie is a story of a young fox named Rose. Rose is really good at finding things with her nose by using her sense of smell. Everyone she knows comes to her when they have lost something because they know she can find it with her nose. One day the kids started calling her Nosy Rosie. Rose did not like that at all and did not want to be called Nosy Rosie. So, Rose stopped using her nose to help people find things. Everyone kept asking her please but she refused as long as they called her Nosy Rosie. Well on day she found her lost little brother in a bush by using her nose. Her mother and friends where so proud and told her how amazing she was. Rose then decided that she would start helping everyone find what they had lost as long as they quit calling her Nosy Rosie and they did. She was never called Nosy Rosie again.

I enjoyed reading Nosy Rosie. The story was good and easy to follow. The pictures used to illustrate this book were much simpler than most books I have read so far. However the individual pictures on the page helped to describe Rose and how she looked for things with her nose. I think that by using several pictures separated by white space helped to tell the story a lot better than if the illustrator were to have used full page spreads. Rose was an adorable character that you could help but like. She reminded me of one of my friend back home with her attitude. It wasn't a mean or stuck up attitude but a more nonchalant type one that I adored.

This book could be used for couple different things. The first issue that I noticed was name calling. This book address that issue really well when the kids start calling her Nosy Rosie. It shows her getting upset but instead of being mean and resentful she just stops helping the people until they don't call her names anymore. I think Rose sets a great example for kids that get called names by showing them that they don't have to deal with but to not let it overwhelm them with feelings. The book also addresses the sense of smell. Throughout the book Rose uses her nose to find things. I think that in the classroom it would be a great way to open up a discussion about what we use our nose fore, what kinds of smells do we smell in certain places, foods and stuff like that. I would definitely use this book in my classroom to talk about either of these to issues. It could be used as a great opener to both topics.
